I just started mining and I have a couple of questions.

I've read a lot about it before I reverted to Reddit to get more help. But I just wanted to get some input from you guys rather to read threads and stuff that are 2 years old and what not.
So I just started mining today purely out of curiosity. I don't plan to make loads of cash but just to say I've mined a btc. Anyway, I'm in Slush's pool using GUIMiner, my wallet isn't fully syched yet but I'm mining, is that a bad idea? I have a couple more question. I appreciate your guys help.
1.How long do you guys mine for each day?
2.How long did it take for you to make your first full btc?
3.I read somewhere that mining would be dead in 1 or 2 months, (that blog being posted in February) is that correct?
4.I only have a 7870 and I have 330Mhash/s, what can I expect out of that?
5.I've read a lot of people giving other people advice saying you need 3 or 4 gpu's other wise you are only covering energy & fee prices, is that true?
6.With a rig like mine, single 7870, how much energy would it be costing me a day?
7.As of right now, I have 602 accepted shares & 3 stale/invalid. What does this mean?
Thanks, you guys are probably fed up of questions like these but I'd rather talk to someone than to read for hours through forums and blogs that are years old and may be incorrect.

How do I restore a Ledger Segwit BTC wallet with Electrum?

Disclaimer: Some of the following probably does not make sense because I don't understand the fundamentals.
This question comes about from the need to verify that a bitcoin wallet created by the Ledger hardware wallet can be recovered with the seed phrase that the Ledger presents upon initialization. If you have a convincing method that shows that, please let us know.

Let's use the following as an example seed:
type pet trust because divide warrior science fame peanut miracle flush lake cart egg chicken portion deliver loop concert dismiss parent hundred lava negative

Show, perhaps using https://iancoleman.io/bip39/ to verify/clarify, that the extended public keys are the same.
I currently get with Ledger and a root path of 49'/0'/0':
xpub6CkZCWPK9CtN1Afd2JatxkAJs5pyBRgxDFjyyX1FoX2dLvGeisDXT6tcXf7SmzCCHDHzbcjYrrT33Pi4excHUFmxx9eSouYKKTzXWAUhWGR
I see that the Electrum key (with a root path of 49'/0'/0') matches Ian Coleman's Mnemonic Code Converter:
ypub6XapWB4EHtRqrTrjrfNXAqFp33yR83gT8NGCkuu9BXQWQ25syXP65AYkYs52mtr7grQoM6L7KWoavgKdNf2JGVTZpVLsPpMobC4AthV89Kr

Questions:
  1. Is it possible to restore a Ledger Segwit (BIP49?) BTC wallet with Electrum? If so, how?
  2. And what's up with one being ypub and one being xpub?
  3. Why does https://iancoleman.io/bip39/ not show the Ledger key?
  4. If I can't restore a Ledger Segwit BTC wallet with Electrum, with which software wallet can I restore it / test the restoration process?

I recently found on page http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/seedphrase.html the following:
Version Prefix Description
0x0488b21e xpub P2PKH or P2SH
0x049d7cb2 ypub P2WPKH in P2SH

Edit: I think I figured it out ...somewhat. You can indeed verify that the receiving addresses are the same - xpubs and ypubs notwithstanding. In this case, the first receiving address is 324Gu76F6oHvmLiRXFgPnpGhpN6Sv1eNVW.

Uh, where are Matt Miller's Bloomberg videos today?

I'm currently working nights. I just woke up, expecting my daily dose of actually funny, informative 12 Days of Bitcoin videos from Bloomberg... I search and I get this.
http://www.bloomberg.com/video/european-banking-authority-bitcoin-caveat-emptor-3bUr_ghpTuaU7Xw3fc7bpw.html
http://www.bloomberg.com/video/the-single-biggest-risk-posed-by-bitcoin-2WMIJnpbRf~KNHCNlBZ5Hg.html
First of all both these experts make seriously wrong statements about bitcoin... assuming bitcoin has a "closing" of the day and making comments that clearly indicate they have no idea how it works...

So where our his videos? Is he sick?
Edit: Not only that, his Twitter hasn't had any activity and he hasn't made any new "research" posts.

How come my bitminter client isn't functioning at the speed the bitminter shows me?

Whenever I use bitminter it says my speed is around 17 mhps which is only .02 ghps. However, when I go onto the bitminter website it says my power is 415 thps. As I am new to bitcoins and would like to use mining to get into it as apposed to investing cash, I would like some advice to why my speed is so slow.

New to this who Bitcoin mining thing. Just have some questions.

Im usually pretty good a googling everything but a lot of websites seem to be down.
Just have some questions about Bitcoin mining if anyone would like to shed their light on me.
1.) I am running a java based clint though Bitminter. (Its the only one I can get working on the mac) It says that I'm getting a speed of 50 - 60 Ghps. Is that good? How much bitcoin with that generate. It has been spinning for 3 hours and i haven't generated anything just around 200,000 work units started on.
2.) It says that the approx. mint speed is between 1.5 to 2 bitcoin per day. Is that what I'm going to receiving?
3.) When it checks my live stats it says that I'm not contributing anything when the client says im doing 50-60Ghps.
Sorry for being a N00b. I appreciate everyone in advance for helping me.
Edit BitMinter is now saying I am doing stuff but only at 0.143 Mhps where the client is saying 60Ghps. I'm clearly missing something here.

Are all the bitcoin mining calculators wrong and is bitcoin mining based only on luck?

If I understand correctly, pools compete with each other to find the right hash of a single block before the others.
The first pool finding the hash gets the 25 bitcoins + fees.
The fact that a pool finds the hash before the others is based on pure luck. All the users of each pool continue to submit hashes. When one of those hashes complies with the difficulty level, the pool has mined the block and gets the bitcoins.
For example, I am mining right now on the gnash.io pool and the pool was able to get the right hash of many blocks one after the other. I get the same amount for each block mined, roughly 0.000026 for 1 Ghps. If the pool mines 5 blocks a day, I get 0.00013 bitcoins, but if the pool is lucky and mines let's say 15 blocks a day, I get 0.00039 bitcoins.
Bitcoin mining calculators can't predict this.
EDIT: just to confirm this, the pool I am using mined 29 blocks yesterday and 40 the day before.

Bitcoins for Biofuels. Renewable energy research support.

Hi Guys
I’m doing a sort of crowd fund for my renewable energy research, so if you’re interested then please read on. If you are interested but cannot afford to give anything I would appreciates an upvote just so more people see this. The following is a very simplified version so if anyone has any questions I will be in the lab all day and should be able to keep on top of any questions you have. I have been specifically vague in several areas because I don’t want to be identified. There are several people in this subreddit that will know who I am based on what I have already provided.
I've been working in biofuels research for the past 4 years. However, in the last couple of years my country has experienced a very conservative shift against climate change related issues. This has resulted in funding for research like mine to be cut and consequently my PhD was discontinued in 2012. Fortunately for me, the research I was working on was getting a lot of positive interest internationally. A few labs have tried to head hunt me essentially and get me to complete my PhD with them. The two that expressed the most interest and the ones I ended up going to are in the UK and the US. One is a top 10 and the other a top 5 QS globally ranked university.
Unfortunately the time frame between the end of my PhD and the cut off dates for funding at these universities was very tight, meaning that I had to leave almost immediately. We therefore did not have time to apply for the necessary visas for me to be paid legally in these countries, which meant I have had to fund myself entirely for almost a year now. I had enough money saved to do this and I was also an early investor in Bitcoins which meant I even had some emergency money if I ran out.
However, while I was in the states I burnt my arm, not even that badly, and my insurance refused to pay my medical bill. This hit my finances really hard and I have since been trying to make the last of my money go as long as possible. My professors have been unreal trying to help me out where they can or find me money but because of the visa issue they’re hands are pretty much tied. What I am doing is so important to my future that I have been continuing my research in hope that something will come through. Unfortunately nothing has and I am currently down to my last 20 pounds and desperate.
As I mentioned before, I was an early adopter of BTC. Unfortunately I had to cash out my BTC when they were a bit over $100 US to pay the medical bill. Watching the exchanges since then has been pretty depressing. I was also forced to cash out the last of my BTC shares, which by that stage had all crashed in value after the closure of BTCT. So missed the second price jump and lost on the exchanges, haha. So classic.
I’m trying to raise about $4000 dollars to get me through the next few months. I have never asked for money in my life and have achieved everything on my own steam. I’m not a rich kid, I’ve been offered these amazing opportunities because I work hard and am good at what I do. Something I take a lot of pride in. I’m not looking to make money off this so if for some reason I should be given more than I need to survive I was thinking I could donate the excess to Wikipedia (yes, scientist love wikipedia, don’t listen to what anyone else says) or I could return it or I am open to suggestions. I want to pursue this career but if I cannot continue my work here then I don’t think I will have another opportunity like this.

Please help me continue my research. As i said, i'll be here all day so i'm happy to answer any questions as long as they don't expose me.
